Despite a Decrease, China Remains Indonesia's Largest Non-Oil and Gas Importer in August 2023

The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) reports that Indonesia's total non-oil and gas imports reached US$16.21 billion in August 2023. This figure is down 1.34% from July 2023, which amounted to US$16.43 billion.

The August 2023 import value also decreased by 12.10% year-on-year (yoy) compared to August 2022, which stood at US$18.44 billion.

Cumulatively, from January to August 2023, the value reached US$124.74 billion. This import figure also dropped by 5.54% compared to the January-August 2022 period, which amounted to US$132.05 billion.

BPS states that the decline in imports is due to weaker imports from several major players. For example, China imported US$40.72 billion from January to August 2023. This figure plummeted by 8.68% compared to the January-August 2022 period, which amounted to US$44.59 billion.

Despite the decrease, China remains the country with the largest import contribution to Indonesia until August 2023. Its contribution reached 32.65% of Indonesia's total import value.

The second largest importer to Indonesia is Japan, with US$11.14 billion from January to August 2023. Like China, imports from Japan also decreased by 1.80% compared to the same period last year, which amounted to US$11.35 billion.

Third is Thailand with imports valued at US$6.94 billion. This figure also decreased by 9.56% from the same period last year, which amounted to US$7.68 billion.

Fourth is South Korea with a value of US$6.61 billion, down 2.04% from January-August 2022, which amounted to US$6.74 billion.

Fifth is the United States with a value of US$6.39 billion. Among the top five, only the United States recorded a positive import value increase of 4.53% from the previous US$6.11 billion in January-August 2022.
