East Java's New and Renewable Energy Mix Reached 6.42% in 2021

The Indonesian government is pushing for the realization of net-zero emissions by 2060. Therefore, all provinces across the country are currently enhancing the potential of new and renewable energy (NRE).

East Java (Jatim), one of the largest provinces in Java, has an NRE potential reaching 25,542 Mega Watts (MW) as of September 2022. Based on data from the Ministry of Communication and Information in East Java, the NRE mix in the province had reached 6.42% in 2021.

In 2018, NRE in East Java reached 4.47%. This percentage then increased slightly until 2020. NRE in East Java was recorded at 4.59% in 2019, and then rose slightly to 4.61% in 2020.

The government targets an NRE share of 15.7% of the national energy mix in the National Priority (PN) of the 2022 Government Work Plan (RKP). This share will increase to 23% by 2024.

To achieve this target, the government has set several program objectives: First, increasing energy needs fulfillment by prioritizing the increase of NRE with a (cumulative) capacity of 13.9 gigawatts (GW).

Second, the government will also accelerate the development of NRE power plants by 1,921.8 MW. Third, the government will increase the utilization of biofuel for domestic needs by 9.6 million kiloliters.

Fourth, the government will increase domestic energy fulfillment with coal allocation for domestic purposes (Domestic Market Obligation/DMO) of 177 million tons.

Fifth, the government will enhance the development of the supporting NRE industry with a domestic content level (TKDN) in the NRE power plant sector of 44.6%, and sixth, the government will reduce final energy intensity by 0.9 oil equivalent barrels (SBM) per Rp 1 billion.
