The Indonesian Migrant Workers Protection Agency (BP2MI) reported receiving 310 complaints from Indonesian Migrant Workers (IMWs) between January and March 2024.

Of all the cases received, only 3% have been handled, while 97% are still in progress.

The most frequent complaint reported to BP2MI was IMWs wishing to return home (59 cases).

This was followed by unpaid wages (27 cases), pregnant IMWs with children (25 cases), IMWs who died in their destination country (24 cases), and failed departures (24 cases) by the end of the first quarter of 2024. Remaining cases are detailed in the accompanying graph.

Separately, the North Sumatra Regional Police (Polda Sumut) recently thwarted the smuggling of 24 illegal IMWs to Malaysia in the waters off Pantai Labu, Deli Serdang, on Saturday, April 20, 2024.

“The 24 illegal IMWs comprised 14 from East Nusa Tenggara, one from North Sumatra, one from Bengkulu, and eight from Aceh,” said Sumut Police Public Relations Head Kombes Hadi Wahyudi in a statement, as reported by Kompas.com on Sunday, April 21, 2024.

Hadi explained that the fishing boat carrying the illegal IMWs departed from Sungai Benteng Sirantau and went to sea off Pantai Cermin to be transferred to a larger vessel bound for Malaysia.

“The police will coordinate and cooperate with BP2MI in the investigation process,” he said.
