The number of Indonesian workers (TKI) who died abroad in 2016 reached 247, a 42 percent increase from the previous year. Of this number, 203 TKIs were from placements in the Asia-Pacific region and 44 TKIs from placements in the Middle East. The number of Indonesian workers who died abroad increased starting in 2014, particularly from placements in the Asia-Pacific region.
Based on data from the National Agency for the Placement and Protection of Indonesian Workers (BNP2TKI), the most Indonesian workers who died abroad in 2016 were those working in Malaysia, reaching 137. This was followed by Taiwan with 27, Saudi Arabia (17), Brunei Darussalam (13), and the United Arab Emirates (10).
During the 2010-2016 period, 1,050 TKIs died abroad. The highest number was from placements in Malaysia, reaching 386 TKIs, followed by Saudi Arabia with 196 TKIs, and Taiwan with 138 TKIs. The highest number of Indonesian workers who died abroad occurred in 2012 at 330, while the lowest was in 2014 at only 113.
