According to the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) report, the number of individual agricultural businesses in Indonesia reached 29.36 million units in 2023.

Of this number, the majority of Indonesian agricultural businesses are managed by farmers aged 43-58 years old, or Generation X, accounting for 42.39% of the total registered farmers.

Atqo Mardiyanto, the Chief Secretary of BPS, noted an imbalance in the composition of farmers in Indonesia.

"This could be a basis for policy, because our farmers are still largely, or many of them, relatively elderly, over 55 years old," said Atqo in a press conference via the BPS YouTube channel on Monday (December 4, 2023).

This data is based on the Agricultural Census (ST2023) conducted during June-July 2023. This is the seventh agricultural census carried out by BPS, since its inception in 1963.
