Ganjar Wants Teacher Salaries Increased to Rp30 Million; What are Current Civil Servant Teacher Salaries?

Presidential candidate Ganjar Pranowo hopes to elevate the teaching profession in Indonesia through decent salaries.

"I envision that a newly hired teacher's starting salary would be Rp10 million. I believe that intelligent people would want to become teachers. Then, after several years, their salary could reach Rp20 million, and even Rp30 million. We don't even need to talk about Rp50 million; Rp30 million would be a decent salary for teachers," Ganjar said, as quoted from Rheiland Kasali's YouTube channel, a Professor at the University of Indonesia's Faculty of Economics and Business, on Thursday (7/9/2023).

In the interview, Ganjar claimed that this salary calculation was carefully considered by financial experts and education specialists.

According to Ganjar, the proposed teacher's salary also takes into account the government's financial capacity.

"I asked my colleagues to calculate this, considering the budget we allocate to truly leverage the demographic bonus, ultimately receiving dividends (profits). I asked them to calculate how much we could start with (teacher's salary). Because it is from them (teachers) that people can become like us," said Ganjar.

Ganjar also believes that higher salaries will attract intelligent Indonesians to the teaching profession, as the amount would be competitive with salaries of managers in large companies.

Current Salaries of Civil Servant Teachers?

The current salaries of civil servant (PNS) teachers are still regulated by Government Regulation (PP) Number 15 of 2019.

This regulation stipulates that PNS teacher salaries are the same for all government institutions, both central and regional, but differ based on rank and length of service.

To register as a teacher in major cities like Jakarta, the minimum requirement is a bachelor's degree (S1). Accepted applicants will receive PNS status and be placed in rank IIIa. Meanwhile, teachers with a Diploma 3 (D3) degree will be placed in rank IIa.
