According to a report by the Indonesian Ministry of Manpower (Kemnaker), approximately 234,000 workplace accidents occurred in Indonesia throughout 2021.
The number of accident victims increased by 5.6% compared to the previous year, setting a new record high.
Based on the definition in Minister of Manpower Regulation Number 26 of 2015, a workplace accident is an accident that occurs in the context of employment, including accidents during commutes to and from work, as well as occupational diseases (PAK).
In 2021, the five sectors with the highest number of workplace accident victims were trade and services; diverse industries; consumer goods industries; agriculture, plantations, forestry, and fisheries; and basic and chemical industries.
Accident rates in these five sectors have consistently been high, with some even showing an increase during the 2019-2021 period.
"This may indicate that the implementation of Occupational Safety and Health (K3) programs in the workplace is still ineffective in these five business sectors," stated Kemnaker in its report, *Indonesia's Occupational Safety and Health Profile 2022*.
Kemnaker stated that these figures do not fully represent the national case. This means that many workplace accident victims may remain unrecorded.
"Routine reporting of cases from companies and from provincial manpower agencies to the central government (Directorate General of Industrial Relations Supervision and Occupational Safety and Health, Kemnaker RI) has not been optimal," Kemnaker stated in the report, *Indonesia's Occupational Safety and Health Profile 2022*.
"Workplace accidents and PAK cases are actually reported far more frequently in the context of claims for the Work Accident Insurance (JKK) program of BPJS Employment. However, BPJS Employment program participants only reach 30.6 million workers, out of a total of 126.51 million workers in Indonesia (2019)," it continued.
Kemnaker is therefore encouraging companies to strengthen the implementation of K3 to prevent and reduce workplace accidents.
"Investments made in the implementation of K3 will yield a return on investment (ROI) in both the short and long term, increasing business competitiveness and ensuring business sustainability," said Kemnaker.
"Good implementation of K3 is a crucial factor in preventing losses and increasing social and economic benefits for workers, employers, the government, the community, the nation, and the country as a whole," it continued.
