10 Provinces with the Highest Number of Young Farmers in 2021

Indonesian youth are a valuable asset, playing a crucial role in national progress across various economic sectors, including agriculture. However, in reality, young people are less interested in working in the agricultural sector compared to the service and industrial sectors.

According to a report by the Central Statistics Agency (Badan Pusat Statistik), only 19.18% of Indonesian youth worked in the agricultural sector in 2021. Meanwhile, 25.02% worked in the industrial sector, and the majority (55.8%) worked in the service sector.

Papua had the highest percentage of youth working in the agricultural sector, reaching 73.05%. This was followed by East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) at 45.97% and West Kalimantan at 37.46%.

Conversely, DKI Jakarta had the lowest percentage of youth working in agriculture, at only 0.4% in 2021. This was followed by Banten and Riau Islands, at 4.57% and 4.69% respectively.

The majority of young people working in the agricultural sector (37.13%) are from rural areas. Furthermore, more than half of the total youth working in agriculture (57.62%) did not complete primary school (SD).
