Data processed by Restorasi Merah—a collaboration between the Himpunan Mahasiswa Tambang (Mining Students Association) of the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) and several Indonesian universities—and the Indonesian Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) shows that the Indonesian mining sector workforce predominantly comprises elementary school graduates (SD), accounting for 31.6% of the total mining sector employees in 2022.

The research team notes that jobs in the mining sector, particularly coal mining, remain attractive to the workforce due to higher salaries compared to most other sectors in the Indonesian economy.

The team's analysis indicates that coal mining jobs offered higher wages than several other sectors in 2018, more than double the average agricultural wage, 86% higher than the average construction wage, and 59% higher than the average manufacturing wage.

Meanwhile, the data processed by the team shows that nearly 240,000 people work in the coal mining sector.

"If the government completely halts the use of coal-fired power plants (PLTU) and coal production, it must prepare to create new jobs for the hundreds of thousands of Indonesian workers currently employed in the coal mining industry," the research team wrote in its report, quoted on Friday (May 31, 2024).
