Thirty percent of workers were in the agricultural sector in February 2022.

The Indonesian Employers Association (Apindo) has stated that three types of industries will conduct mass layoffs (PHK) in 2023. This is due to a significant decrease in demand from the market for these industries.

Apindo's Vice Chair, Shinta Widjaja Kamdani, said that the three industries facing mass layoffs are textiles, footwear, and furniture. All three are labor-intensive industries oriented towards exports.

"Mass layoffs will definitely happen next year," said Shinta, as reported by Katadata.co.id on Wednesday (21/12/2022).

Based on data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), the number of people aged 15 and over who were employed was 135.6 million in February 2022.

Of that number, 40.64 million were employed in the agricultural sector in March 2022. This accounts for 29.96% of the total workforce, the largest share compared to other sectors.

Other major sectors employing a large number of workers are wholesale and retail trade, with 25.8 million workers (19.03%), followed by the manufacturing industry with 18.67 million workers (13.77%).

The electricity and gas supply sector is the sector that employs the fewest workers, with only 309,480 workers (0.23%). Following this are the real estate sector with 450,520 workers (0.33%), and water supply with 534,250 workers (0.39%).
