The survey results from the Indonesian Public Opinion Discussion and Study Group (KedaiKOPI) show that 1 in 5 middle-class respondents in Indonesia have experienced layoffs (PHK).

Among this group, 66% chose to use emergency savings to maintain their economic condition after losing their jobs.

Additionally, 60.9% sought additional work, 57.4% reduced family expenses, and 30.6% borrowed money from friends or family.

Others chose to sell small assets (25.5%), take out online loans (22.1%), and start a business (0.9%).

The survey also found that 43.4% of respondents who were laid off had not found new employment for more than 6 months.

Meanwhile, some were unemployed for 1–3 months (26.8%), 4–6 months (20%), and those who successfully found new employment in less than one month (9.8%).

KedaiKOPI conducted this survey on 932 respondents, which was then narrowed down to 235 respondents who were affected by layoffs. The respondents were aged 17-55 years and were spread across various regions of Indonesia.

Data collection was conducted from October 14-19, 2025, using the online-computerized assisted self-interview (CASI) method.

All respondents belonged to the middle class, with income criteria between Rp3.5 million and Rp14.5 million per month, or per capita expenditure of Rp2 million to Rp9.9 million per month.
