Based on data from the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), the number of workers in the micro industry in Indonesia has increased in recent years.

In 2013, the number was approximately 5.41 million people. By 2023, this had risen to 7.36 million people.

Meanwhile, the number of workers in the small industry decreased, from 4.33 million people in 2013 to 2.48 million people in 2023.

BPS defines the micro industry as a manufacturing business with 1-4 employees, while the small industry employs 5-19 people.

"Micro and small industries are largely labor-intensive industrial businesses that play a role in job creation and driving the local economy," stated BPS in Profile of Micro and Small Industries 2023 report.

"With characteristics such as limited capital, the utilization of family members as labor, and high adaptability to changes in the local market, these businesses have the potential to grow and develop," it added.

This year, the Ministry of Manpower and the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) are collaborating to improve the competencies of up to 10,000 micro and small businesses through various training and capacity building programs throughout Indonesia.

"The Ministry of Manpower is preparing the modalities because we have vocational training centers and instructors, modules. Then it will be discussed because most of it falls under the domain of the Ministry of MSMEs," said Manpower Minister Yassierli, as quoted by Antara (25/3/2025).
