A report by Indonesia's Central Statistics Agency (BPS) compiled data on the education levels of Indonesian Migrant Workers (IMWs) in 2023.

The largest group (33.22% of total IMWs last year) had completed upper secondary education (SMA) or vocational high school (SMK).

The BPS noted that this group tends to be better prepared for work in sectors such as services, manufacturing, and office work compared to those with lower levels of education.

The second largest group were primary school (SD) graduates (28.34%), followed by junior high school (SMP) graduates (24.10%).

"This reflects the continued high reliance on workers with basic skills for informal sector jobs, such as domestic helpers and blue-collar workers," wrote the BPS in its report, *Data Stories for Indonesia - Indonesian Migrant Workers*, published on Friday, December 20, 2024.

The number of IMWs who did not complete primary school (9.12%) was higher than those with tertiary education. Only 3.26% had completed a Bachelor's or higher degree (S1-S3), and 1.95% had completed a Diploma (D1-D3).

The BPS added that male IMWs outnumbered female IMWs (55.9% vs. 44.41%).

Most IMWs were aged between 25 and 44 years old when they departed for their final destination. The highest percentages were in the 40-44 age group (16.29%) and the 25-29 age group (16.18%).

"This shows that Indonesian migrant workers are generally of working age, tending to seek work opportunities to support their own and their families' economic lives," wrote the BPS.
