The Jakarta Provincial Government (Pemprov DKI Jakarta) stated it will electrify vehicles to reduce air pollution.
Through its official website, the Pemprov DKI explained that in the public transportation sector, 52 electric Transjakarta buses are already in operation. This number excludes an additional 100 electric buses targeted for completion by the end of 2023.
Besides the public transportation sector, there are operational vehicles belonging to the Pemprov DKI Jakarta. Electrification has been carried out by the Jakarta Transportation Agency (Dishub DKI Jakarta) with the procurement of 186 electric motorcycles as operational service vehicles.
The Pemprov DKI stated that this number will increase with a plan for 800 more electric motorcycles as operational vehicles for the Jakarta Transportation Agency. An additional 614 electric motorcycles are projected to be distributed, but the Pemprov DKI has not specified a completion target year.

This effort is undertaken considering that in 2022, the number of motor vehicles in Jakarta reached 26,370,535.
The Pemprov DKI noted that this number will be even higher if vehicles from the Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, and Bekasi (Bodetabek) agglomeration area, which frequently travel through Jakarta, are included.
"The abundance of gasoline-fueled motor vehicles on Jakarta's roads certainly plays a significant role in air pollution in Jakarta," wrote the Pemprov DKI on its website.
Research by the Jakarta Environmental Agency (Dinas Lingkungan Hidup DKI Jakarta) in 2020 also showed that the transportation sector contributed 44% of overall fuel consumption or pollution sources in Jakarta.
The Pemprov DKI believes Jakarta will always rely on transportation, both private and public, as a means of citizen mobility.
"Therefore, the transition from gasoline-fueled vehicles to electric-based vehicles or electrification can be one solution to reduce air pollution," it stated.
