Where are the most expensive junior high school tuition fees located for the 2017/2018 academic year?

Based on the 2018 National Socioeconomic Survey (Susenas) Social, Cultural, and Education Module (MSBP), the average total cost of education at the Junior High School (SMP) level was Rp 4.23 million. For public schools, it was Rp 3.73 million, and for private schools, it was Rp 5.46 million during the 2017/2018 academic year.

Jakarta became the province with the highest education costs at the SMP level, reaching Rp 7.65 million during the period of July 2017-June 2018. This was followed by the Riau Islands at Rp 5.71 million and West Java at Rp 5.4 million. Meanwhile, the province with the lowest education costs at the SMP level was East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), at only Rp 1.86 million.

The total education costs for students include fees paid to the school and expenses incurred by the students themselves, such as pocket money and transportation. Government Regulation Number 48 of 2008 concerning Education Funding states that education funding is a shared responsibility between the central government, regional governments, and the community. The government has also provided educational assistance such as the Operational School Assistance (BOS) and the Smart Indonesia Program (PIP).
