This is the Most Widely Used Tin Product in the World in 2022

The International Tin Association (ITA) survey estimates that annual (year-on-year/yoy) processed tin consumption in 2022 fell by -3.2% to 376,900 tons.

Of this 376,900-ton volume, the largest use was for solder, at 50%.

This was followed by chemicals at 16% and tinplate at 12%.

Processed tin was also used for batteries and tin-copper alloys, each accounting for 7%. An additional 8% was used for other materials and goods.

The ITA stated that the decrease in tin consumption reflects a significant correction after the pandemic recovery in 2021.

Most national economies experienced instability, particularly due to rapid inflation in the second half of the year.

The survey also shows a continued contraction in tin demand of -1.6% in 2023, reaching 371,000 tons.

This is attributed to the negative impact of inflation offset by improvements in tin technology in solar panels, electric vehicles, and digitalization.

"Various macroeconomic factors negatively impacted tin demand projections, reversing much of the 2021 recovery," wrote the ITA in its report, cited Thursday (4/4/2024).

This research involved 84 companies, encompassing approximately 42% of the estimated global processed tin consumption in 2022.
