Scholarship Recipients in Indonesia Reach 20.14%: Details by Education Level

High costs remain a significant obstacle to equitable education in Indonesia. Therefore, the government provides scholarships or educational assistance based on student achievement and parental financial need.

Statistics Indonesia (BPS) shows a decade-long upward trend in scholarship and educational assistance recipients, rising from 3.89% in 2009 to 20.14% in 2021.

The most significant increase occurred between 2015 and 2018, with the percentage of students receiving scholarships reaching 20.28% in 2018—more than double the 10.95% in 2015.

These scholarships encompass the Indonesia Pintar Program (PIP), scholarships from the central government, regional governments, non-governmental organizations, and other sources.

Based on educational level, primary education shows a greater increase in scholarship and educational assistance recipients than higher education levels.

In 2021, 22.66% of primary school students and 22.24% of junior high school students received scholarships or educational assistance. This percentage is higher than that of senior high school students (16.46%) and university students (9.60%).

Considering gender, a slightly higher percentage of female students received scholarships (20.31%) compared to male students (19.98%).

Based on area type, a higher percentage of students received scholarships in rural areas (23.34%) than in urban areas (17.90%).

Finally, regarding the type of educational institution, students attending public schools received scholarships at a rate of 21.65%, higher than those attending private schools (16.09%).
