How many schools were there in Indonesia during the 2020/2021 academic year?

A report from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) shows that the number of schools in Indonesia reaches 217,283. The number of elementary schools (SD) is the highest in the country.

A total of 148,743 state and private elementary schools existed in Indonesia during the 2020/2021 academic year. The majority, or 131,058 schools, are state elementary schools or their equivalent, representing 88.11% of the total number of elementary schools in the country.

The number of state and private junior high schools (SMP) in Indonesia during the 2020/2021 academic year reached 40,597. 58.30% of these are state schools, totaling 23,670 schools.

Furthermore, the number of state and private senior high schools (SMA) in Indonesia during the same academic year reached 13,865. The majority are private schools, namely 6,966 schools or 50.24% of the total number of senior high schools in Indonesia.

Meanwhile, the number of state and private vocational high schools (SMK) in Indonesia in 2020/2021 totaled 14,078 schools. 10,499 schools, or 74.22%, are private schools.

Based on region, the highest number of state and private schools in Indonesia is located in West Java. The details are: 19,577 elementary schools, 5,456 junior high schools, 1,648 senior high schools, and 2,898 vocational high schools.
