The Institute for Demographic and Poverty Studies (IDEAS) and Dompet Dhuafa conducted a survey on the welfare of teachers in Indonesia in May 2024.

Their findings, based on a sample of 403 teachers, revealed that more than half, or 55.8%, held side jobs.

Of these teachers with side jobs, the majority, 39.1%, earned extra income by teaching at tutoring centers or providing private lessons.

Furthermore, 29.3% combined teaching with trading, 12.8% with farming, and 4.4% with working as laborers.

Another 4% supplemented their income as content creators, 3.1% as online motorcycle taxi drivers (ojol), 1.3% as religious speakers, and 0.8% as writers.

However, the extra income earned by these teachers with side jobs was not significant.

"The majority of teachers with side jobs earned less than Rp500,000 per month," said IDEAS researcher Muhammad Anwar in a press release received by Databoks on Tuesday (May 21, 2024).

IDEAS and Dompet Dhuafa conducted this survey during the first week of May 2024 to commemorate National Education Day.

The online survey involved 403 teacher respondents from 25 provinces. 291 respondents were from Java and 112 were from outside Java.

Respondents included 123 civil servant teachers (PNS), 118 permanent foundation teachers, 117 honorary or contract teachers, and 45 PPPK teachers.
