High School Education Costs in Jakarta are Double the National Average

According to the 2018 National Socioeconomic Survey (Susenas) Social, Cultural, and Education Module, the national average total cost of senior high school (SMA) education reached Rp 6.53 million. Meanwhile, the cost of senior high school education in DKI Jakarta reached Rp 13.44 million. This means that the cost of education in the capital city during the 2017/2018 academic year was double the national average.

The cost of senior high school education in DKI Jakarta is the highest compared to other provinces, as shown in the graph below. The province with the lowest education costs is West Sulawesi, at only Rp 3.02 million, or 22% of the cost of education in DKI Jakarta.

The total cost of education for students includes fees paid to the school, such as registration fees, and expenses incurred by the students, such as pocket money and transportation. To ease the financial burden on students, the government has also provided educational assistance, such as the School Operational Assistance (BOS) and the Indonesia Pintar Program (PIP).
