According to a Chegg survey, 80% of an 11,706-sample of global university students use generative artificial intelligence (Gen AI) technology to support their studies.

Gen AI is a type of AI that can generate text, images, or other media based on commands, such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, and DALL-E.

In this user group, the majority feel that Gen AI can help them learn faster.

Here are the top 10 reasons global university students use Gen AI to support their studies in 2024:

2. Provides more free time: 41%

3. Enables more creative learning: 38%

4. Makes learning more interactive: 37%

5. Personalizes learning: 35%

6. Helps overcome learning differences: 32%

7. Reduces the cost of additional tutoring: 28%

8. I don't always feel comfortable asking for help from lecturers: 22%

9. I find it difficult to schedule time to meet with lecturers: 13%

10. Assigned by lecturers: 10%

However, some students are also skeptical of this technology.

"Nearly two in five students (38%) said they did not use Gen AI to support their university studies because they were concerned about the accuracy of Gen AI-generated content," Chegg said in the Global Student Survey 2025.

Chegg conducted this survey in collaboration with Yonder Consulting. The online survey was conducted from October 1-23, 2024, involving 11,706 respondents, then narrowed down to 9,318 respondents who use Gen AI in their studies. Respondents were aged 18-21 and spread across 15 countries.
