Nearly 50% of Schools Have Teachers Who Provide Paid Private Tutoring

According to a survey by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), various corrupt practices exist within Indonesian educational institutions.

One of the most common is teachers providing tutoring services for additional fees or levies. This case was found in 48.18% of national educational units.

The KPK also found that in 38.47% of educational units, educators used school or campus facilities for personal gain.

Furthermore, 28.18% of educational units implemented unofficial levies during new student admissions, and 23.87% imposed unofficial fees in the certification process, job equalization, or other document submissions.

In response to these findings, KPK Chairman Setyo Budiyanto called for a collective commitment to holistically integrate anti-corruption values into the school curriculum and culture, build an educational ecosystem that upholds ethics, transparency, and accountability, and enhance the capacity and exemplary conduct of educators as role models for students.

The KPK conducted this survey in 36,888 educational units spread across 507 regencies/cities in 38 Indonesian provinces. A total of 449,865 respondents participated in the survey, comprising students, parents, educators, and heads of educational units.

The survey was conducted from August 22 to September 30, 2024, using two approaches. First, online methods via WhatsApp, email blasts, and Computer Assisted Web Interviewing (CAWI). Second, a hybrid method using Computer-Assisted Personal Interviewing (CAPI).
