Background of the Gubernatorial Candidate in the 2020 Simultaneous Regional Elections

Based on a report by the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), nine provinces held simultaneous regional elections (Pilkada) in 2020.

These simultaneous regional elections in the nine provinces involved 25 pairs of gubernatorial and vice-gubernatorial candidates.

Of the 25 gubernatorial candidates who contested the simultaneous regional elections, the majority (24%) had a gubernatorial background. Next were those with regent/bupati backgrounds and private sector/other backgrounds, each at 20%.

Gubernatorial candidates with a vice-gubernatorial background comprised 12%, followed by police officers and mayors at 8% each, and members of the DPR (House of Representatives) and civil servants (PNS/ASN) at 4% each.

Of the 25 vice-gubernatorial candidates who contested the 2020 provincial-level simultaneous regional elections, 40% had private sector/other backgrounds. Those with regent/bupati backgrounds comprised 28%, and members of the district/city DPRD (Regional People's Representative Council) and provincial DPRD each accounted for 8%.

There were also vice-gubernatorial candidates with backgrounds as police officers, civil servants (PNS/ASN), and mayors, each at 4%.

The nine provinces that held simultaneous regional elections in 2020 were:

2. Bengkulu
3. Jambi
4. Riau Islands
5. Central Kalimantan
6. South Kalimantan
7. North Kalimantan
8. Central Sulawesi
9. North Sulawesi
