The Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) recorded 205 dams in Indonesia by 2021, spread across 16 provinces.
West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) has the highest number of dams, with 72 units. This is followed by Central Java and East Java, each with 42 and 30 units respectively.
Next, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) has 18 dams, while West Java has 11.
A dam is a structure built to hold back water, creating reservoirs, lakes, or recreational areas. Dams are also often used to channel water to hydroelectric power plants (PLTA).
The purposes of building dams include improving the utilization of water resources, water conservation, controlling the destructive power of water, and providing a safe storage facility for mining tailings to maintain environmental safety and security.
