Artificial intelligence (AI) technology continues to advance, reaching and even surpassing human intelligence.
This is recorded in the *AI Index Report 2024* from the Stanford University Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HAI) research institute.
HAI measures AI intelligence levels in 7 areas, namely:
1. Visual reasoning: Understanding visual information/images
2. Visual commonsense reasoning: Understanding visual information/images and explaining their meaning accurately
3. Image classification: Classifying images based on specific categories
4. English language understanding: Understanding the English language
5. Natural language inference: Assessing the accuracy of hypotheses
6. Multitask language understanding: Answering questions across disciplines, such as economics, law, history, science, and others
7. Competition-level mathematics: Answering competition-level mathematics problems
The results show that AI has now surpassed humans in visual reasoning.
If the standard of human intelligence in understanding visual information is 100%, AI intelligence in this area has reached 104% in 2022.
In 2022, AI's capabilities also exceeded humans in image classification (104%), English language (102%), and hypothesis assessment (101%).
Then in 2023, AI intelligence has matched humans in cross-disciplinary knowledge (100%).
Meanwhile, until 2023, AI is still below humans in accurately explaining the meaning of an image (visual commonsense reasoning) and in competition-level mathematics. However, its ability is already very close, with a score of over 90%.
"AI can produce fluent text in various languages, process sound, and even explain the meaning of memes. With this progress, AI is increasingly entering our lives," said the HAI team in their report.
"AI surpasses humans in some areas, but not in all," they continued.
