Kutai Kartanegara Experienced the Deepest Economic Contraction in East Kalimantan in 2020

Kutai Kartanegara Regency recorded the deepest contraction in East Kalimantan during the pandemic. The mining sector, which experienced a contraction of more than 6%, burdened the economy of the prospective Nusantara Capital City (IKN) regency in 2020.

Based on data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), Kutai Kartanegara's economy, measured by the Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP) at constant 2020 prices, contracted by 4.4% to Rp 120 trillion in 2020 compared to before the Covid-19 pandemic.

For information, Kutai Kartanegara's economy is supported by the mining sector, which contributed Rp 89.15 trillion or approximately 59.81% of the GRDP in 2020.

The regencies/cities with the next deepest contractions were Berau at 3.35%, followed by Kutai Timur at 3.21%, and Kutai Barat at 2.92%. The contraction in these four regencies was deeper than the average contraction in East Kalimantan Province, which was 2.85%.

Paser Regency recorded a contraction of 2.77% in 2020. This was followed by Bontang Regency at 2.76%, Bontang City at 2.76%, and Penajam Paser Utara Regency (also a prospective IKN Nusantara) at 2.34%. Furthermore, Samarinda City experienced a contraction of 1.07%, Balikpapan City 0.69%, and Mahakam Ulu Regency 0.26%.
