The war between Israel and the Palestinian militant group, Harakat al-Muqawamah al-Islamiyyah (Hamas), erupted in early October 2023.
In the early hours of Saturday local time (October 7, 2023), Hamas bombarded Israeli territory with rocket attacks.
"Hamas claimed they launched 5,000 rockets in the initial attack. The Israeli military, however, reported 2,500 rockets fired," Al Jazeera reported on Saturday, October 7, 2023.
The following day, the Israeli government declared war and immediately retaliated on Sunday, October 8, 2023.
"The Israeli Air Force pounded Gaza with airstrikes on Sunday night, in an effort to destroy the Hamas terrorist group's capabilities," The Times of Israel reported on Monday, October 9, 2023.
Over the past decade, Israel has received the most significant arms supply from the United States (US).
According to data compiled by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), during the period 2010-2022, there were 39 publicly reported arms delivery contracts from the US to Israel.
These contracts detailed transactions for various weapons, including bombs, missiles, rocket launchers, combat vehicles and their engines, military helicopters, fighter jets, and their accessories.
SIPRI did not find the complete value of all 39 contracts. However, based on available data, the accumulated value of arms delivery contracts from the US to Israel between 2010 and 2022 reached US$9.8 billion—and this is only a partial figure.
The most expensive contract was for Fighter Ground Attack (FGA) Aircraft, military aircraft designed for ground attacks, capable of bombing tanks, other armored vehicles, and various enemy installations on land.
During the 2010-2022 period, the US delivered approximately 37 FGA fighter jets to Israel, with a recorded value of around US$5.5 billion.
In terms of volume, the most frequently delivered weapon from the US to Israel during this period was guided bombs, approximately 21,000 units.
Besides the US, other countries with recorded arms transaction contracts with Israel include Germany (10 contracts), Italy (3 contracts), and Canada (3 contracts).
During the 2010-2022 period, Germany supplied Israel with combat vehicle engines, radar systems, submarines, warships, and underwater projectiles or torpedoes.
Canada supplied fighter jet engines, while Italy supplied naval artillery, fighter jets, and military helicopters.
