Indonesia's Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (Kominfo) Blocks 1.9 Million Pornographic Content Items Online, Mostly from Websites

The Ministry of Communication and Informatics (Kominfo) has blocked access to or removed 1.9 million pieces of pornographic content across various platforms between 2016 and September 14, 2023.

According to a report from the Directorate of Informatics Application Control, Directorate General of Informatics Applications, Ministry of Kominfo, the majority of this pornographic content (1.21 million pieces) was found on websites.

Furthermore, 737,700 pieces of content were identified as pornographic on social media, and 2,075 pieces were found on file-sharing platforms.

Minister of Kominfo, Budi Arie Setiadi, explained that since assuming office in July 2023, 60,791 pieces of content have been blocked. "This includes 18,219 pieces of content from websites, 42,521 from social media, and 51 from file-sharing platforms," Budi stated in a press release on Friday, September 15, 2023.

Budi stated that these access blocks are in accordance with Government Regulation Number 71 of 2019 concerning the Organization of Electronic Systems and Transactions, and Minister of Kominfo Regulation Number 5 of 2020 concerning Private PSE.

These regulations stipulate that Kominfo has the authority to directly block access to gambling and pornographic content.
