Improving Total BPJS and JKN Healthcare Coverage: What Was the 2020 Healthcare Budget?

The 2020 health budget was Rp 132.2 trillion, or 5.23% of the total national expenditure of Rp 2,528.8 trillion. This figure represents a 7.4% increase from the previous year's Rp 123.1 trillion. Proportionally, the health budget has remained around 5% of the national budget for five consecutive years.

In the Indonesian President's speech on the 2020 State Budget (APBN) Financial Note, it was stated that the government would continue priority programs in the health sector by strengthening health services and access at primary healthcare facilities. Furthermore, the government also emphasized strengthening health at the initial stage, namely through promotive and preventive measures including fulfilling nutritional needs and immunizations for toddlers, as well as public education on healthy lifestyles. The convergence of programs and activities to accelerate the reduction of *stunting* in 2020 was expanded to 260 regencies/cities.

"Support programs for the health and safety of pregnant women and mothers are also a priority. BPJS Kesehatan (the Indonesian Health Insurance Agency) and the National Health Insurance system will undergo a complete overhaul," Jokowi stated in his speech.
