Despite the Shadow of a Trade War, Indonesia's Economy Still Grew 5 Percent in the Third Quarter of 2019

Amidst the ongoing trade war between the United States (US) and China, Indonesia's economy still grew above 5 percent. This contrasts with Singapore, whose economy slowed down, growing only 0.1% (Y0Y) in the third quarter of 2019. Similarly, Thailand recorded economic growth of 2.3% in the second quarter of 2019.

Indonesia's economy, measured by Gross Domestic Product (GDP) at current prices in the third quarter of 2019, reached Rp 4,067.8 trillion. When measured at constant 2010 prices, Indonesia's GDP grew 5.02% (YoY) to Rp 2,818.9 trillion.

The trade war initiated by the US has suppressed China's economic growth throughout this year. In the first quarter of 2019, the economy of the "Bamboo Curtain" country still recorded growth of 6.5% (YoY). However, this slowed to 6.2% in the second quarter and further slowed to 6% in the third quarter. This has impacted the economies of Southeast Asian countries (ASEAN-6).
