10 Indonesian Provinces with the Lowest Rates of Inadequate Food Consumption in 2023

Based on data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), the prevalence of undernourishment (PoU) in Indonesia was 8.53% in 2023. This figure is down from 10.21% the previous year.

BPS defines the prevalence of undernourishment as the condition where a certain population consumes an insufficient amount of food to meet the energy needs for a normal, active, and healthy life.

The higher the PoU figure, the higher the percentage of the population consuming food that is less than their energy requirements.

Of the 34 provinces in Indonesia, 13 provinces have a PoU rate below the national average.

West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) recorded the lowest PoU rate in Indonesia, at only 2.17% last year.

This means that the population in NTB consumes food, but less than their energy needs, which is less than 2% of the total population in the region.

The following are the 10 provinces with the lowest prevalence of undernourishment nationally in 2023:

1. NTB: 2.17%
2. DKI Jakarta: 2.57%
3. Banten: 2.87%
4. Bali: 3.77%
5. South Kalimantan: 4.48%
6. West Java: 5.5%
7. North Sulawesi: 6.26%
8. South Sumatra: 6.53%
9. West Sumatra: 7.63%
10. South Sulawesi: 7.84%

Meanwhile, the province with the highest PoU rate in 2023 was Papua, at 35.63%, followed by Maluku at 30.27% and North Maluku at 29.56%.
