Kulon Progo's Economy Most Affected by COVID-19 in Yogyakarta in 2020

Kulon Progo Regency's economy was the hardest hit by the Covid-19 pandemic in the Special Region of Yogyakarta last year. This is reflected in the regency's economy, measured by the Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP) by business field at constant 2010 prices (ADHK). The GRDP contracted by 4.06% in 2020, equivalent to Rp 8.41 trillion compared to Rp 8.77 trillion in the previous year.

This contraction was the deepest compared to the other four regencies/cities in DI Yogyakarta during the Covid-19 pandemic last year. This is despite Kulon Progo's GRDP having recorded growth of 13.49% in 2019 compared to the previous year.

The construction sector was one of the main drivers of the economic contraction in Kulon Progo. This sector experienced negative growth of 18.44%, equivalent to Rp 1.39 trillion compared to Rp 1.7 trillion in 2019.

Besides Kulon Progo, Sleman Regency also experienced the largest economic contraction, at 3.91% in 2020 compared to the previous year. Yogyakarta City experienced negative growth of 2.42%.

Furthermore, Bantul Regency's economy also contracted by 1.66% in 2020 compared to 2019. Similarly, Gunung Kidul Regency experienced negative growth of 0.68% last year compared to the previous year.
