Maluku and Papua's Economies Performed Worst in the Second Quarter of 2019

The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) recorded negative economic growth in Maluku and Papua in the second quarter of 2019, amounting to -13.12% (yoy). This figure is significantly lower than the previous period's positive growth of 18.18%.

The worsening economic conditions in the region are due to two provinces experiencing negative growth: West Papua and Papua. Furthermore, the economic contribution of Maluku and Papua to the Indonesian economy in the second quarter of 2019 was the lowest among other islands, at 2.17%.

Meanwhile, the highest economic growth was recorded on Sulawesi Island at 6.76%. However, Sulawesi's contribution to national economic growth is far less than Java's. Sulawesi contributed only 6.34%, while Java reached 59.11%. This is despite Java's economic growth being second only to Sulawesi at 5.68%.

The same is true for Sumatra Island. Sumatra's economic growth was recorded at 4.62%, second lowest after Maluku and Papua, and below national economic growth. However, Sumatra's contribution to economic growth reached 21.31%, second highest after Java.
