Cilacap Regency Experienced the Deepest Economic Contraction in Central Java, More Than 10% in 2020

Cilacap Regency experienced the deepest contraction compared to the other 34 regencies/cities in Central Java Province. This is measured by the Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP) of the business sector based on the 2010 constant current prices (ADHK), which decreased by 10.36% to Rp 89.93 trillion in 2020. In 2019, the GRDP in this regency reached Rp 100.33 trillion.

The contraction in Cilacap's economy was caused by the manufacturing industry, which experienced a decrease of 13.98% to Rp 58.36 trillion in 2020. The previous year, the value of the manufacturing industry in this regency was Rp 67.84 trillion. As is known, the manufacturing sector in the regency contributed 58% to Cilacap's economy last year.

Blora Regency experienced the next deepest economic contraction, namely 4.6% in 2020 compared to the previous year. This was followed by Kudus Regency, which experienced negative growth of 3.53%, then Semarang Regency with a contraction of 2.67%, and Magelang City with a contraction of 2.45%.

Other regencies/cities that experienced the deepest negative growth were Tegal City at 2.25%, Temanggung Regency with a contraction of 2.13%, Jepara Regency at 1.94%, Pekalongan Regency at 1.89%, and Karanganyar Regency at 1.87%.

Of the 35 regencies/cities in Central Java, all experienced contraction in 2020 compared to the previous year. The implementation of restrictions on community activities to curb the surge in Covid-19 cases caused the economies of these regencies/cities to experience negative growth last year.
