2016, Maluku and Papua Experienced the Highest Economic Growth

The highest domestic economic growth in 2016 was not in Java, but rather in Maluku and Papua. Data from the Central Statistics Agency (Badan Pusat Statistik) recorded that the economic growth of the provinces in Maluku and Papua reached 7.45 percent in 2016. This figure was the highest compared to other islands.

Maluku and Papua's economic growth in the fourth quarter of 2016 grew by 14.66 percent compared to the same quarter of the previous year, and grew by 6.11 percent compared to the previous quarter. The economy of Maluku and Papua in the third quarter of 2016 also grew by 13.87 percent compared to the previous quarter.

Indonesia's GDP at constant 2016 prices grew by 5.01 percent to Rp 9,433 trillion from Rp 8,982.5 trillion in the previous year. The manufacturing industry sector made the largest contribution, namely Rp 2,017.6 trillion, or approximately 20.51 percent of the GDP. This was followed by the agricultural sector at Rp 1,209.7 trillion or 13.45 percent and the wholesale and retail trade sector at Rp 1,255.2 trillion or 13.2 percent of the GDP.
