Indonesia Corruption Watch (ICW) has compiled a list of former convicts in corruption cases who are included in the provisional list of candidates (DCS) for the 2024 elections for district/city and provincial level DPRD (Regional People's Representative Council) members.
ICW states that the database used is the 2019 KPU (General Election Commission) announcement, which mentioned 72 former corruption convicts running for legislative seats at the district, city, and provincial levels.
"After further investigation, based on ICW's findings, at least 24 former corruption convicts were found on the provisional list of prospective legislative candidates previously released by the KPU," said ICW on its website, Monday (28/8/2023).
Based on party affiliation, the highest number of candidates come from Golkar and Gerindra, with 4 candidates each. Hanura and Demokrat follow with 3 candidates each.
ICW added that to date, the KPU has not yet released data on former corruption convicts running for DPRD membership at the district, city, or provincial levels.
In contrast, during the 2019 elections, the KPU was considered very progressive by ICW for announcing the list of candidates with a history of corruption convictions.
"This means that the current KPU's actions are clearly a step backward, lacking anti-corruption commitment and further demonstrating a lack of good faith in upholding the principles of open and accountable election implementation," said ICW.
