The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) reported that prices in the food and transportation groups recorded a rapid annual inflation rate in April. This inflation increase coincided with increased demand during Ramadan.

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) for the food, beverages, and tobacco expenditure group rose 5.2% in April from the previous year. The main commodities driving food price inflation were cooking oil, broiler chicken, and fresh fish.

The CPI for the transportation group recorded an annual inflation rate of 4.84% in April. This surge in prices for transportation expenditure is in line with the resurgence of public mobility and the increase in the price of Pertamax fuel.

Not all expenditure groups recorded price increases. The CPI for the information, communication, and financial services group recorded an annual deflation rate of 0.22% in April.

"We expect inflation to increase fundamentally and substantially in the second half of 2022," according to Faisal Rachman, an economist at Bank Mandiri, in an analysis released on Monday.

"Inflationary pressure in 2022 is susceptible to rising due to demand-side inflation amid increasingly rapid economic recovery driven by increased public mobility following the easing of (activity restrictions), which increases the velocity of (circulating) money."
