The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) recorded East Kalimantan's (Kaltim) economy, measured by the Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP) at current prices (ADHB), at Rp695.16 trillion in 2021.
Measured by the GRDP at constant 2010 prices (ADHK), Kaltim's economy grew by 2.48% to Rp484.3 trillion throughout 2021 compared to the previous year.
This achievement is higher than the 2.87% contraction experienced in 2020. However, Kaltim's 2021 GRDP achievement is still lower than the pre-COVID-19 pandemic period, which saw growth of up to 4.7%.
In terms of business sectors, the mining and quarrying sector still dominated Kaltim's economy throughout 2021, contributing 45.05%. The next largest supporting sectors were construction (8.95%) and agriculture (8.48%).
The health and social activities sector recorded the highest growth at 13.34% throughout 2021 compared to the previous year. The next highest-growth sectors were information and communication (7.96%) and construction (4.41%).
From the expenditure side, the export of goods and services component was the main driver of Kaltim's economy, reaching 114.02% in 2021. However, this figure was reduced by the import of goods and services component by 65.36%.
The next largest contributing expenditure component was gross fixed capital formation (GFCF) at 30.24%. Meanwhile, household consumption expenditure only contributed 16.61%.
The GFCF component recorded the highest growth at 8.03% in 2021 compared to the previous year. This was followed by the export of goods and services component, which grew by 2.96%, and household consumption expenditure, which grew by 1.2%.
In the near future, the government will relocate the center of government from DKI Jakarta to the Nusantara Capital City (IKN). The IKN is located in the National Strategic Area (KSN) spanning two regencies in East Kalimantan: North Paser Regency and Kutai Kartanegara Regency.
