Kadin: 57.9% of Business Operators Affected by Natural Disasters, Mostly Due to Forest Fires

According to a survey by the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin), 57.9% of business respondents were affected by natural disasters or environmental disruptions in the past 12 months prior to the survey.

Meanwhile, 42.1% of respondents reported being unaffected by disasters.

Among those affected, 13% experienced forest and land fires (karhutla). This proportion was the highest compared to other disasters.

Other reported disruptions included extreme weather (10.9%), drought (9.7%), and flooding (5.5%).

"The high occurrence of forest fires and drought aligns with the drier and longer dry season of 2026 caused by El Niño," Kadin stated in its report published on October 22, 2026.

Climate-based disruptions—such as forest fires, extreme weather, drought, and flooding—covered 39.1% of businesses, accounting for about two-thirds of those affected. Kadin explained that this indicates climate risk has become a recurring operational risk.

"However, weather, climate, and natural disasters only ranked 10th out of 14 business challenges (4.7%), indicating that their impact is still perceived as a temporary shock," Kadin noted.

The survey involved 330 Kadin members across various industries in 28 provinces, conducted online via WhatsApp and web forms between September 14–30, 2026. The margin of error is approximately 5.9% with a 95% confidence level.
