The flow of renewable energy investment in emerging market and developing economies (EMDEs) has strengthened over the past decade.

According to BloombergNEF data, in 2015, the accumulated value of renewable energy investment in developing countries globally was only around US$49 billion.

"As developing economies and populations grow, access to and demand for energy also increase, driving up emissions. In 2024, these countries accounted for 43% of global greenhouse gas emissions, a record high," said BloombergNEF.

"The funding needed for the energy transition in developing countries far exceeds current investment flows. The absence of binding targets and standardized reporting methods also hinders transparency and progress," they added.
