Top 10 Global Sugar Producing Countries 2024/2025: Is Indonesia on the List?

According to data from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), global raw sugar production reached 180.75 million metric tons in the 2024/2025 marketing year.

During this period, Brazil was the world's largest sugar producer, reaching 43.7 million metric tons.

"Brazilian sugar production is expected to increase by 1 million tons to a record high of 44.7 million tons, driven by favorable weather conditions leading to increased sugar yields," the USDA wrote in its report, *Sugar: World Markets and Trade*.

Below is a list of the top 10 countries with the highest raw sugar production in the world during the 2024/2025 harvest season:

1. Brazil: 43.70 million metric tons

2. India: 28 million metric tons

3. European Union: 16.49 million metric tons

4. China: 11 million metric tons

5. Thailand: 10.04 million metric tons

6. United States: 8.44 million metric tons

7. Russia: 6.5 million metric tons

8. Pakistan: 5.86 million metric tons

9. Mexico: 5.1 million metric tons

10. Australia: 3.85 million metric tons

Indonesia ranked 14th globally, with sugar production of 2.4 million metric tons.

"Indonesian sugar production is expected to increase by 200,000 tons to 2.6 million tons due to the larger area of sugarcane harvested and higher yields," the USDA wrote.

Note that this USDA data refers to different harvest and marketing years in each country.

For example, in Brazil, the 2024/2025 sugar harvest refers to the 12-month period from April 2024 to March 2025.

This differs from India, the European Union, China, the United States, Russia, Pakistan, and Mexico, whose harvest seasons refer to October 2024 to September 2025.

Australia's harvest is from July 2024 to June 2025, while Thailand's is from December 2024 to November 2025.
