Indonesia's Sugar Consumption in 2024/2025 Among the Highest Globally

Indonesia is among the world's largest sugar consumers, consistent with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA)'s report, *Sugar: World Markets and Trade*.

The report ranks Indonesia sixth globally, with an estimated domestic sugar consumption of 7.6 million metric tons as of November 2024/2025. This raw figure is up from 7.5 million tons in 2023/2024.

This high consumption is not matched by domestic production, which reached only 2 million tons in November 2024/2025, placing Indonesia 17th worldwide.

India holds the top consumer spot, with an estimated 32 million tons in November 2024/2025, up from 31 million tons in 2023/2024. Despite its high consumption, India is the world's second-largest sugar producer after Brazil, with an estimated 35.5 million tons.

The European Union is the second-largest sugar consumer, with a projected 16.5 million tons in November 2024/2025, followed by China at 15.6 million tons. The United States is fourth with an estimated 11.2 million tons, and Brazil fifth at 9 million tons. Other top ten consumers include Pakistan, Russia, and Egypt.

The USDA also notes that total estimated global sugar consumption reached 179.63 million metric tons as of November 2024/2025.
