Indonesia: The World's Second Highest Number of Tuberculosis Cases in 2023

According to a World Health Organization (WHO) report, 8.2 million people worldwide were diagnosed with tuberculosis (TB) in 2023, a 9.3% increase compared to the 7.5 million cases in 2022.

The increase in new global TB cases in 2023 is the highest since the WHO began monitoring the disease in the mid-1990s.

Of all global TB cases in 2023, 55% were in adult males, 33% in adult females, and 12% in children and adolescents.

In 2023, Indonesia was the second largest contributor to TB cases globally, accounting for 10% of the total.

2. Indonesia: 10%
3. China: 6.8%
4. Philippines: 6.8%
5. Pakistan: 6.3%
6. Nigeria: 4.6%
7. Bangladesh: 3.5%
8. Democratic Republic of Congo: 3.1%

The WHO also reported 1.25 million deaths from TB in 2023. This is a decrease compared to 2022, which saw 1.32 million deaths.

"The fact that TB continues to kill and sicken so many people is outrageous, especially as we have the tools to prevent, detect, and treat it," said WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus in a press release on the WHO website on Tuesday, October 29, 2024.

"WHO urges all countries to meet their commitments to expand the use of these tools and end TB," he continued.
