The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) released the 2023 Regional Competitiveness Index (IDSD) at the beginning of this year (February 29, 2024).
The IDSD is a measurement instrument for the competitiveness of provinces and regencies/cities to reflect the level of regional productivity.
"It is hoped that the 2023 IDSD will serve as a basis for research and policymaking related to regional competitiveness in Indonesia," said Khairul Rizal, a researcher from BRIN's Directorate of Measurement and Indicators of Research, Technology, and Innovation, in a press release on the BRIN website (February 29, 2024).
In 2023, the national average IDSD score reached 3.44 points on a scale of 0-5. A higher index value reflects a higher level of productivity in a region.
Of the 34 provinces researched in 2023, 14 achieved IDSD scores at or above the national average. The remaining 20 provinces were below the average.
DKI Jakarta achieved the highest IDSD score in 2023, at 3.97 points. This was followed by Central Java (3.89), Bali (3.85), Yogyakarta (3.84), East Java (3.78), and West Java (3.76).
Next in line were South Sulawesi (3.70), Banten (3.60), North Sumatra and West Sumatra, each with 3.58 points.
The 2023 IDSD adopted the conceptual framework and measurement methods of the 2019 Global Competitiveness Index (GCI) from the World Economic Forum (WEF).
The IDSD calculation uses 4 components, 12 pillars, and 63 indicators at the provincial level, and 48 indicators at the regency/city level.
