The Indonesian government has allocated Rp722.6 trillion (approximately US$47 billion based on current exchange rates, but the exact amount depends on the date of conversion) for education in the 2025 State Budget (RAPBN). This represents 20% of the total national expenditure for that year.
The education budget in the 2025 RAPBN shows a 24.2% increase from the 2024 outlook of Rp581.3 trillion.
“The budget is allocated for improving school children's nutrition, school renovations, and the development of excellent schools,” said President Joko Widodo when reading the 2025 RAPBN financial note in Jakarta, as reported by Katadata on Friday, August 16, 2024.
The education budget is detailed as follows: Rp295.93 trillion from central government spending, Rp346.67 trillion in transfers to regions (TKD), and Rp74.4 trillion in investment financing.
According to the 2025 Financial Note, the overall education policy for next year will focus on:
1. Improving access to education at all levels through the expansion of compulsory education and educational assistance.
2. Improving the quality of secondary and higher education graduates.
3. Instilling awareness of human rights and religious moderation at all educational levels.
4. Improving the quality of learning facilities and infrastructure, especially in 3T (remote, outermost, and underdeveloped) areas, in both general and religious education.
5. Improving the competence of teachers and education personnel.
6. Strengthening vocational education with a focus on job market needs ("link and match"), including through strengthening teaching industry collaborations and Centers of Excellence Vocational High Schools (SMK Pusat Keunggulan).
7. Increasing investment in education, including through scholarships, research support, pesantren (Islamic boarding schools), and cultural advancement.
8. Improving the quality of learning through the provision of free meals.
