The 2023 Indonesian Health Survey (SKI) data shows that the prevalence of stroke in Indonesia reached 8.3 per mille, or per 1,000 people aged over 15 years, last year.
Based on provinces, Yogyakarta ranked first with a prevalence of 11.4 per 1,000 inhabitants, exceeding the national average.
North Sulawesi had the second highest prevalence at 11.3. Third was DKI Jakarta with a prevalence of 10.7.
Next were West Java and East Kalimantan, both with a prevalence of 10.
Meanwhile, the lowest recorded stroke prevalence was in the Papua Pegunungan (0.9); Central Papua (2); and Papua (3.7).
Previously, Azhar Jaya, Director General of Health Services (Yankes) at the Ministry of Health, revealed that stroke is the leading cause of death in Indonesia.
Stroke is even the number one cause of disability and the number two cause of death worldwide after heart disease.
He mentioned that the prevalence of stroke in 2013 reached 7 per 1,000 inhabitants. This figure rose to 10.9 per 1,000 inhabitants in 2018.
On another note, stroke is one of the catastrophic illnesses with the third highest cost after heart disease and cancer, amounting to Rp3.23 trillion in 2022.
"This figure increased compared to 2021, which was Rp1.91 trillion," said Azhar in his remarks and directions at the *World Stroke Day 2023* event on October 29, 2023, quoted from the Yankes Kemenkes website.
