The Riau Islands' economy grew by 3.4% in 2021.

The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) recorded that the economy of the Riau Islands, based on the regional gross domestic product (RGDP) at current prices, reached Rp275.64 trillion in 2021.

Measured by RGDP at constant 2010 prices, the Riau Islands' economy grew by 3.4% to Rp180.95 trillion in 2021 compared to the previous year.

This achievement is better than 2020, where the Riau Islands' economy contracted by 3.8% due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, this achievement is still lower than 2019, which grew by over 4%.

From the business sector perspective, the manufacturing industry was the largest contributor to the RGDP growth of this province, which is a new region separated from Riau, with a contribution of 2.63% in 2021. This was followed by the construction sector at 0.86%, and information and communication at 0.3%.

From the expenditure side, the export of goods and services component contributed the most to the Riau Islands' economy, namely 13.17% (minus imports of goods at 11.39%). The gross fixed capital formation (GFCF) component contributed 1.29%, and the household consumption expenditure component contributed 0.32%.
