The Largest Global Tax Revenue Comes from VAT and Consumption Taxes

Oxfam International's confederation reveals that the largest share of global tax revenue comes from value-added tax (VAT) and other consumption taxes, estimated at 44%.

Second is personal income tax (PIT) at 19%. Close behind in third place is payroll tax at 18%.

Corporate income tax (CIT) accounts for 14% in fourth place, followed by wealth tax at a mere 4% in fifth place. Other taxes contribute only 1%.

This data was obtained by Oxfam from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD)'s global revenue statistics database, OECD.Stat. The sample includes 88 countries: 33 OECD member countries and 55 non-OECD countries.

The 2019 calculation averages total revenue from CIT, wealth taxes (including property, inheritance, net wealth, and financial and property transaction taxes).

Payroll tax calculations also include social security and other levied taxes, as well as taxes on goods and services. Calculations are in US dollars ($).
