According to the IPCC team, out of tens of thousands of species in the terrestrial ecosystems studied, 14% are at high risk of extinction if the Earth's temperature rises by 1.5 degrees Celsius (°C) compared to the average temperature of the pre-industrial era (1850-1900).

The proportion of species at risk of extinction increases with higher temperature increases, as shown in the graph.

According to the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW), some of the species most threatened with extinction due to global warming are polar bears ( *Ursus maritimus*), green sea turtles ( *Chelonia mydas*), Adélie penguins ( *Pygoscelis adeliae*), Asian elephants ( *Elephas maximus*), sharks, whales, and bees.

The extinction of these animals could disrupt the balance of ecosystems and even affect human food security. A small example is bees.

"From a physics perspective, limiting global warming requires limiting CO2 emissions, achieving net-zero CO2 emissions, and significantly reducing emissions of other greenhouse gases," it continued.
