Data from Iran's Statistical Centre, processed by Trading Economics, shows that Iran's economic growth, measured by its gross domestic product (GDP), has never been negative during 2021-2023, the period of President Ebrahim Raisi's tenure.
Iran's economic growth has been rather volatile during this period. In Q1 2021, growth reached 6.58% year-on-year (yoy). In this first year, growth ranged from 4% to 6.9%.
Entering Raisi's second year in office, Iran's economic growth slowed considerably. In Q1 2022, it was only 2.25% (yoy). That year, growth only reached between 2% and 4.6%.
In 2023, Iran showed more resilience. Growth reached 7.9% (yoy) in Q2 2023, the highest during Raisi's presidency.
Previously, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian were confirmed dead in a helicopter crash. According to *Katadata*, the wreckage of the helicopter was found in a foggy mountainous region of East Azerbaijan Province.
"President Raisi, the Foreign Minister, and all passengers on the helicopter died in the accident," an Iranian official was quoted as saying by Reuters on Monday, May 20, 2024.
Raisi, born on December 14, 1960, was elected in 2021, succeeding Hassan Rouhani. Raisi's victory is often associated with the win of the conservative faction loyal to Iran's Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei.
Iran has both a Supreme Leader and a President. The Supreme Leader is the most powerful head of state. In practice, Ali Khamenei has the right to intervene in all state affairs, especially foreign policy and the nuclear program, as reported by *Detik.com*.
The President is the second-highest elected official after the Supreme Leader. Raisi, and previous Iranian presidents, are responsible for the day-to-day running of the government, including domestic and foreign policy.
